Fat people face open discrimination. The Fat Rights Coalition is working to combat it.
Become a Founding Member of FatRights
A message from our President:
The Fat Rights Coalition - FatRights - was born just last year. A series of emails and video chats begat plans for our first Think Tank, held in November 2007. The reception to that Think Tank was astoundingly positive; lots of energy flowed through the fat blogs. That electricity was something I felt, too, bolstered by everyone's enthusiasm and willingness to make this organization the best it can be.
One of the big initial tasks for FatRights is to establish ourselves as an honest-to-gosh non-profit organization. At our most recent Think Tank we set in plan a motion to make this happen. The first step of that plan is to ask you, readers and supporters, for financial contributions in order for us to form a legal entity.
Our financial goal is a modest US$330. That's all it takes.
Why contribute? For starters, I'd like you to take a look at our Mission Statement. FatRights's two current major initiatives - the Fat Fifty and Dare to Show Your Face - will play into a broader goal to help secure fat rights at a legal level.
With the Fat Fifty, we'll be documenting the law in all fifty US states (and beyond!) in order to illustrate just how deep this problem runs, particularly to people outside of our communities. With Dare to Show Your Face, we're putting heads back on the "headless fatties" everyone sees on the nightly news and having people tell their stories as fat human beings. These projects will help serve as proof that discrimination against fat people is real and needs to be addressed legally. When these projects hit their end goals we'll parlay them into bigger goals to get change happening at local levels.
As an incentive, if you choose to donate during the initial fundraising initiative you'll become a Founding Member of FatRights! That means you'll have our respect and admiration for decades to come. With the last Think Tank we chose to raise funds via a website called Fundable and we are using Fundable once again. Fundable allows you to pledge any amount US$10 or over, and no monies will be collected until we reach our goal. Once we do you'll be able to pay via PayPal which means, in turn, that you can use a credit card or bank account.
Because we're not yet a non-profit this contribution is not tax deductible. Once the initial fundraising is done and we become a Real Non-Profit, we'll be able to provide that tax benefit for our members and supporters.
The past three Think Tanks have convinced me that this is an organization that will have a true, well-defined purpose with many eager volunteers working to make it happen. But we can't do it without you. Join us at the start of our journey to change our world and bring justice and equality to fat people everywhere.
Thanks for your time.
Click here to contribute via Fundable. Again, no obligation until we reach our goal.
Current Projects
- Think Tanks: We're holding quarterly(ish!) Think Tanks where smart folks come together to discuss what the movement and FatRights can do.
- Dare to Show Your Face: Our first public project. Turn the media's portrayal of fat people from the neck down into a positive. Check out the videos others have uploaded and get yours up there, too!
- Fat Fifty: Documenting anti-size discrimination laws in the United States and, soon, Australia and the EU.
We need you!
If you're interested in helping, well, that's great! We need you! In addition to help on the above projects, we need copywriters and editors, and people experienced with fundraising within the non-profit sector. Let's talk!
